Introduction to DMLS 3D Printing

What is DMLS 3D printing?
What is DMLS 3D printing?
DMLS uses a fiber laser system that draws onto a surface of atomized metal powder, welding the powder into fully dense metal parts.

Our DMLS 3D Printing Service

Direct Metal Laser Sintering or DMLS is an industrial 3D printing technology which builds parts from a range of metal materials one layer at a time by sintering metal powders together. This process is capable of building highly complex shapes which would be near impossible to make via other methods.

The difference between DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) and SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) is the type of materials that can be used to print the required parts.

Design Guidelines For DMLS
TIPS & TRICKS
Reducing support demand will reduce printing costs
Grid structure can reduce the weight of components
Metal 3D printing parts have excellent mechanical properties
Parts with large solid section can be printed with skin and core instead
TOLERANCES
± 0.3 mm is standard.
WALLS
DMLS can manage very thin walls but HLH do not recommend anything
under 0.8 – 1mm. Size of single piece can not be less than 10*10*10mm.
WALLS
MATING PARTS
Minimum 0.5mm gap between axel and bore or other moving parts.

HOLES & SLOTS
We recommend a minimum of 0.5mm but the larger the better especially as wall thickness or depth increases.
HOLES & SLOTS
PINS & EMBOSSED FEATURES
Pins ≥ 0.8mm but even then risk breaking. Embossed features ≥ 0.3mm.

TEXT & ENGRAVED DETAILS
Are at risk of closing up if not designed with 0.5mm > minimum height.
